Homecoming is a tradition that shows spirit towards school and has many events and activities that contribute towards school spirit. Starting in 1911, known as a “token of affection” or also known as a fun way to represent you and your spirit, Mums had made its way towards Texas homecoming tradition.
Mums are a Texas Tradition that show a bond between either a significant other or a parent and a child. Students wear them to homecoming games, as well as spirit days.
Although It Is mainly popular in Texas, the practice originated in 1911 In Missouri. Mums are usually decorated with your class. Upperclassmen tend to have bigger mums while underclassmen have smaller mums.
Garters are identical but made for men. Garters are smaller, less flashy made to fit around a man’s arm. Garters tend to be less expensive due to not as much desire for the size compared to Mums. Garters are more likely to be given from a significant other, but can also be made at home or even bought.
Mums and Garters are known as a fun way to get into the Homecoming Spirit. Majority of people spend hundreds for their mums and attempt to make them flashy and impressive.
The large mums did not become popular until around the 1970s, a leading company known as “Mums and Kisses” popular in North Texas states. They state how mums have continued to grow over the years and advance.

According to the student population at JHS, mums tend to cost around 100-300 dollars. A cheaper, alternative option towards the price is making it homemade. Home-made mums’ prices vary from the size of your mum.
Mums can weigh up to even 5 pounds or more due to the size! Students find It as a way to embrace their creativity and show school spirit. Mums are typically meant to show things about you such as sports, achievements, and even simple things that represent you. That is why there Is many different types of mums all kinds of people and they are everywhere.
