Varsity Girls Basketball played Brazosport on Tuesday, November 5th. The Warriors walked away victorious, with an ending score of 76-49.
The Warriors were down in the first couple of minutes during the first quarter. Head Coach Pierce called a time out and spoke to the girls, which gave them the boost they needed to end the first quarter 23-10.
“We needed to get them to slow down their pace, and get their head in the game, and just play their game, not the other team’s game”, said new assistant coach Carrie Haire.
During the second quarter, the Exporters played aggressively and caused many fouls. The players for Brazosport were not happy and upset with the calls, but continued playing with intensity and physical aggression on the court. Jordan was gifted with many free throws, and the Warriors left for halftime with a score of 32-23.
After halftime, the Warriors stormed onto the court, ready to finish the game off with their first victory of the season. As Brazosports entered the court after halftime, their energy was just as fierce, and their aggression increased. Jordan answered by making their free throws and dominating the court. The JV and Freshman teams cheered on Varsity as they kept taking shots and rallied around one another with the energy needed to go into the 4th and final quarter. The Warriors still led with a score of 52-34.
As the final quarter commenced, the Warriors were ready to finish the game. As the whistle blew, they played on. With much aggression, Brazosport was losing their cool and was letting it affect their play. With many pushes and fouls, things were not getting better for them. The Warriors kept their heads up and kept going, no matter how many fouls there were. With the final score of 76-49.
“They defended well. We do need to get on top of the step,” said Coach Haire. “We were a little behind on a couple of steps, but we still did a great game, and we hustled.”
Some players noted a few areas to improve upon for upcoming district games.
“I could have worked on moving my feet faster in defense cause I kind of got in foul trouble,” said Allie Hakimazadeh 27’. “We also need to improve on defense for districts — they should have not have scored that many points on us. Just being more disciplined.”
The Warriors have a lot of practicing to do before they face Mayde Creek for their first district game on Tuesday, November 26th. Hopefully this first home game victory will boost the Warriors for the upcoming season and for what is to come in the future.
“I am going to enjoy being with this team for my last year,” said Abigail Taylor 25’. “I think having me on the court, since I am a senior, is going to help the team a lot just because I already know the standards that the coach wants. I think we are going to have a good season.”
